DoSMPC takes action against 119 traders

The Department of Supply Management and Protection of Consumers (DoSMPC) has taken action against 119 traders in the last 10 months.

The department had charged traders of supplying low quality products in the market and operating their businesses illegally. According to the data compiled by the department, it had inspected a total of 167 trade firms across the country, of which a total of 119 firms have been ordered to pay fine amounting to Rs 3.1 million for cheating their customers.

Based on Consumer Protection Act 2018, the department had taken action against the guilty party. As per the department, the old Act did not allow authorities to take action on-the-spot if anyone was found guilty. But the new Act has a provision that states the department can take action against the wrongdoers immediately during the marketing monitoring if found guilty.

The guilty traders were charged with fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 300,000, as per the report of the department.

Among the total number of traders who were penalised, 100 traders were found to be supplying goods to consumers without maintaining receipts. Such traders were charged with fine in the range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 under article 38 of Consumer Protection Act 2018.

Similarly, five traders were found to be operating their businesses without maintaining price list and selling goods at random prices.

Such traders were charged with Rs 5,000 fine. Likewise, traders, who did not support the department’s inspection by providing their business registration documents, were charged with fines between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000. Businesses operating without being registered were slapped with fines of up to Rs 50,000.

Among the wrongdoers, the department had charged PS Outfits with Rs 50,000 and Himalaya Techno Gears Pvt Ltd with Rs 25,000 for selling goods at inflated price. Likewise, Koseli Gudpak Udhyog Hetauda was charged with Rs 200,000 for supplying substandard goods to the consumers and also operating the business illegally.

Meanwhile, Subhakamana Mineral Water Company paid Rs 300,000 for operating against the criteria set by the government for any company.

Likewise, Bhadrakali Oil Store Kageshwori Manahara paid Rs 200,000 for cheating consumers while selling fuel.
