Daughters observe mourning rites for mother

Dhading, May 6

Two daughters have been observing death rituals after their mother’s death as per Hindu tradition at Nilkantha Municipality in Dhading.

Sangita Duwadi and Sarala have been observing the mourning rituals of their mother Bhagawati Duwadi, 41, who died due to cancer on April 30.

Bhagawati was the wife of Bishworam Duwadi, chairman of the Federation of Nepal Small and Cottage Industry, Dhading Chapter. Bishowram said Sangita and Sarala were performing the death rites of their mother as per the understanding among family members. “I thank my daughters for their courage to defy the traditional belief of society,” he added.

The daughters said they had taken up the mourning rituals of their mother because they believed that daughters could do what sons did. The two daughters have been conducting all the mourning period rituals except shaving their hair. Sangita is a Bachelor level student, while Sarala is an eleventh grader. Sarala will be attending her National Examination Board scheduled from May 12.
