Gift that he wanted to take for his wife

KATHMANDU: Penpa Tsering, the US citizen, who was deported from Nepal on June 22, had planned to buy Gau, a Tibetan Buddhist amulet container made of metal and worn as jewellery, for his wife.

As a small container used to hold and carry powerful amuletic objects, the Gau is culturally equivalent to Latin American package amulets, African-American conjure bags or mojo hands, South American charm vials, and American wish boxes.

He had already ordered one through his relatives and was to pick it up this time, but that was not to be.

“They didn’t even let me talk to my wife and two daughters back in the US who were anxiously waiting for my call to learn whether I had reached Nepal safely,” Penpa told THT via email.

According to him, his wife and daughters were shocked to learn that he was deported. “My wife rushed from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to New York, where I was deported.”
