Jhapa, June 29
A three-year-old male elephant was found dead at Ranakali Community Forest of Haldibari, Jhapa, on Thursday morning.
Jalthal Forest Sector Office Chief Jivan Kumar Pathak said the elephant was16 feet long and eight feet tall. A source at District Forest Office, Jhapa, said the tusker might have died after receiving an electric shock from the electric wire installed by locals to prevent tuskers from entering the village.
Locals say as many as 10 tuskers have been waiting outside the fenced area to feed on the maize crop. Locals planted the naked wire for their security and to save the crop from wild tuskers. The beast was buried in the same area after its post-mortem was conducted by a veterinary doctor of District Livestock Office.
According to Pathak, 11 tuskers and 28 people have died in the human-tusker conflict in Jhapa till date.
