KATHMANDU: At least five Nepali climbers including Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja successfully climbed the world’s second-highest peak this morning.
According to Mingma David Sherpa, who is now at the base camp of Mt K2, Purja-led team of rope fixing climbers stood atop the mountain opening a route to the summit point.
With the successful ascent of Mt K2, Purja, who is on his mission to complete all 14 peaks above 8,000 m in just seven months, scaled the tenth mountain in just over three months.
“Purja, Gesman Tamang and Lakpadendi Sherpa from Project Possible team and Changba Sherpa and Lakpa Temba Sherpa from Seven Summit Treks opened the route becoming the season’s first summiteers of the world’s second-highest peak this year,” Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks, said.
K2 summit marked his tenth eight-thousander in just over three months since the former UK’s Special Forces Member first scaled Mt Annapurna on April 23.
“We will head for Broad Peak once the team descends to the base camp,” Mingma David, who also plans to complete his 13th eight-thousander this season, said. He added that at least 17 more climbers would attempt to climb K2 tomorrow morning.
Earlier, Purja, who spent 16 years in British Army, climbed Nanga Parbat on July 3 and Gasherbrum– I on July 15 and Gasherbrum–II on July 18.
The owner of Elite Himalayan Adventure Pvt Ltd, Purja will complete his second phase by climbing Broad Peak in the next couple of days, according to Sherpa.
According to Project Possible, his final attempt will begin in September with plans to climb the remaining three peaks – Mt Manaslu, Mt Cho Oyu and Mt Sishapangma – by this November.
