Kathmandu, September 25
The Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal has warned that colleges will not admit new students this year.
A press release issued today by Basruddin Ansari, president of the association, states, “The government has unilaterally decreased the number of seats in private medical colleges and fixed the fees in an unscientific way. Instead of attracting foreign students, it has complicated admission procedure of foreign students. Medical colleges, therefore, are not able to run institutions in such a scenario.”
“Medical colleges can’t admit new students until the parliamentary committee on education and health issues a directive on tuition fees of medical colleges. Moreover, a clear policy on admission of foreign students has to be framed before medical colleges start admitting students,” it adds.
The association had submitted a memorandum and keys of medical colleges to the prime minister, minister of education, science and technology, minister of health and population, vice-chair of Medical Education Commission, vice-chancellors of universities and deans yesterday.
It has demanded that medical colleges be given 150 seats for MBBS and 75 seats for BDS. Presently, the number of seats is limited to 100 for MBBS and 50 for BDS courses, going against the accreditation standard. It has also demanded that procedures for admission of foreign students be eased and the report submitted by the parliamentary committee on education and health be implemented immediately.
