Tourist standard hotels to offer heavy discounts

Kathmandu, October 31

With a view to support the Visit Nepal Year 2020 tourism campaign next year, Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) — the umbrella organisation representing tourist standard hotels of the country — has announced a discount scheme on room tariff and food bills for foreigners throughout the campaign year.

Effective from January, all member hotels of HAN will offer 30 per cent discount on room tariff and 15 per cent off on food bills to foreigner visitors till the end of December next year, informed Sajan Shakya, general secretary of HAN.

Almost 2,300 small to five-star hotels of the country are affiliated with HAN.

“HAN is supporting the government through all means to make the tourism campaign successful. Discount on room and food tariff rate is a direct support of HAN to the campaign,” said Shakya, adding that HAN is also promoting the country’s tourism and Nepali cuisines in different countries targeting the upcoming tourism campaign.

Along with this, HAN is also preparing to introduce other events and packages for visiting foreign tourists in 2020, informed Shakya.

Prior to this, the Home Stay Association of Nepal (HOSAN) had announced discount packages for tourists on homestay services throughout 2020. As per HOSAN, all member homestays — both private and community-based — will offer 20 per cent discount on their service throughout 2020 targeting the Visit Nepal 2020 campaign. Currently around 1,006 homestays are members to HOSAN. Of the total number of homestay facilities, 628 are community-based homestay services while 378 are private homestay services.

Suraj Vaidya, national coordinator for the Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign, welcomed the decisions of the private sector in support of the campaign. “Visit Nepal Year 2020 is a national campaign and a tourism festival of the country. Support from all quarters is crucial to make the campaign successful,” he said.

Vaidya also informed that preparations for the campaign have been accelerated in recent days. “The campaign is being promoted across the world through multiple channels. The government will also launch various other packages for visiting foreign travellers targeting the tourism campaign next year,” he added.

After two similar mega tourism campaigns in 1998 and 2011, the ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ campaign is being hosted with a more ambitious target to bring in two million tourists annually by 2020.

However, the tourism fraternity has been criticising the government for slow preparations and lack of concrete and attractive packages targeting the campaign.
