‘Govt must work in collaboration with opposition’

Tanahun, November 2

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba today said the government should work in tandem with opposition parties for the country’s development and people’s welfare.

“Opposition parties will support the government in its noble initiatives. The government should take all sides into confidence,” he said while unveiling an autobiography of late NC leader Gobardhan Sharma Pokharel entitled ‘Mero Jiban Yatra (Journey of my life)’ amid a function here.

Accusing the two-thirds majority government led by the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) of pursuing the path of authoritarianism, he maintained that such acts would in no way be acceptable to the NC. “The government is led by the communist party but the country is not communist. The NC, which has been fighting for democracy since 1950 can’t go against democracy,” he said.

Asserting that the Nepali Congress would never compromise in defending democracy and its values, senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel stressed the need to defeat conspiracies being hatched to weaken democracy.

“Democracy gets frail when the NC becomes weak. So there is need to strengthen the NC to safeguard democracy,” Paudel said. He also urged the government to utilise its two-thirds majority for welfare of the country in a wise manner.

NC General Secretary Dr Shashanka Koirala pointed out the need for all to unite and consolidate the party to win the next elections.

On the occasion, senior journalist Kul Chandra Wagle, who is also senior president of Democratic Thought Society, reviewed the book and urged all to go through it and understand the struggles of leader Pokharel in the movement for establishing democracy.
