Six yrs on, bridge still under construction

Dhangadi, November 22

Mohana-Rajghat bridge over the Mohana River in Kailali is still under construction though six years have already passed after its construction started, thanks to negligence on part of the contractor.

Regarding the inordinate delay in the development project, Road Division Office Mahendranagar Information Officer Laxman Joshi said the project would be completed by the end of the current fiscal.

“As there was little progress in the project within the extended period, which clearly reflected negligence on part of the contractor, granting one more extension is out of question,”

Joshi said. “The contractor has shown negligence by doing very little even in the extended three years’ time, so it can’t be exempted from paying fine and it must complete the project by the end of this fiscal at any cost,” he added.

The contract was signed for the construction of 120-metre-long bridge linking Dhangadi’s Chatakpur to Kanchanpur’s Krishnapur Municipality in the fiscal 2013-14, at an estimated cost of 74.5 million rupees. In all these six years, the contractor has constructed single span of the bridge while construction of two other spans is in limbo.

The contractor admitted its failure to complete the project within the stipulated time, but ascribed the delay to unforeseeable situations such as the Indian border blockade and various agitations.

The company has also hastened process for one more extension of the construction project. “We have already submitted our file to the Road Division Office for an extension. In any case, we are planning to put the project through by mid- April this time, even if it takes us to pay fine for the delay,” said Dinesh Batala engineer of the contractor company, Elite Adventure JV.
