Even though the government’s partial lifting of movement restrictions this week does not include beauty parlours and barber shops, some such establishments in Nepal are defying the ban and have started opening for business with protective gear.
One such beauty parlour in Bhaktapur says it is getting a good response from regular customers in the neighbourhood who got fed up of being cooped up in their rooms for nearly three months. The shop, which did not want its location to be disclosed, said it was setting an example by showing that businesses could open as long as they maintained physical distance and took percautions.
Two beauticians in full-body personal protective equipment were busy attending to customers on Sunday, the 80th day of the nationwide lockdown in Nepal. The two wear masks and gowns, while the customers are required to wash their hands, leave footwear ouside and also wear protective masks when entering the facility.
After the hair treatment of every customer, the staff religiously sanitises all upholstery, mirrors, colouring and cutting equipment and walls. The parlour does not yet offer facials and threading services, as they require closer contact with customers.
As per the government directive beauty parlours and hair saloons are not allowed to function till the fourth stage of the lifting of the lockdown in early August. But the owners said they were heavily in debt for their loans, and had no option but to provide basic service for some revenue.
Said one of the owners: “We also wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to reopen a business like a beuaty parlour while taking precaustions against the disease.”
If there was any danger, it would be the customers who should be worried, but that does not seem to be the case. They said they trusted the owners and the precautions they were taking. The beauty parlour is booked for the rest of the week.
