Mentally disturbed woman tests positive for coronavirus, HIV/AIDS in Dhading

Dhading, June 9

A mentally disturbed woman has tested positive for HIV and coronavirus at Ghatbesi of Gajuri Rural Municipality, Dhading.

Having lost her mental balance, the woman had been living on the roadside for the past one-and-a-half years.

She tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

Local people had urged the rural municipality to check up and treat the woman after they noticed unnatural growth of her stomach.
When the woman underwent a pregnancy test at Gajuri Primary Health Centre, she tested positive for HIV, according to Gajuri Rural Municipality Vice-chair Sita Dhungana.

She, however, was not pregnant.

Vice-chair Dhungana said detection of HIV in the woman had posed a risk to the people in the community. “The woman has difficulty in speaking.

Thus, it will be hard to find people having illicit physical relations with her,” said a source at the rural municipality.

The mentally disturbed woman diagnosed with COVID-19 was rescued for treatment saying that she was pregnant.

“When the hospital conducted check-up, her stomach was found to be filled with water,” said Gajuri Rural Municipality Health Department Chief Dr Ramhari Regmi.

The rural municipality has kept health workers involved in the woman’s treatment and people involved in her rescue in quarantine.

The woman has been sent to Teku Hospital, Kathmandu, with support from the rural municipality.

Her address has not been ascertained though she had been living in and around Ghatbesi area for one-and-ahalf years.

Having tested positive for HIV, health workers collected her swab sample for coronavirus test and she was found to be infected with coronavirus too, said Dr Ramhari Regmi. The woman has been sent to Kathmandu for further treatment.

Sixteen people staying in quarantine of Nilkantha Municipality had tested positive for the virus yesterday itself in Dhading. With this, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has reached 23 in the district.
