KAVRE, JULY 9
Twenty-four people are feared dead in the floods caused by incessant rainfall since last night that have swept away 35 houses in Sindhupalchok.
Bodies of two persons have been found, while 22 are missing.
Six people have escaped with injuries.
Bodies of Nikesh Basnet, 24, and his two-year-old son Niyon of Jambu in Bahrabise Municipality who were swept away by a rivulet have been found. The 22 missing persons are from Jambu, Khagdal of Bahrabise Municipality and Bulkoti of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality. They went missing after floods swept away 35 houses and inundated an under-construction hydropower project. A Chinese national working at Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project is also said to be among the missing.
According to Sindhupalchowk District Administration Office, locals, police and Nepali Army personnel have been deployed to search for the missing, all of whom have been identified.
Of those injured, deceased Basnet’s wife Sabita, Subesh Tamang of Jambu, Phurwa Tamang and an infant were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. DSP Madhav Kafle said the two other injured went home after first aid.
Following the incident, Speaker of the House of Representatives Agni Prasad Sapkota flew to Bahrabise and returned this afternoon. Though he was scheduled to fly to the flood site in the morning itself, it was not possible as the helicopter he was riding had to return from Dhulikhel due to adverse weather condition.
Bagmati Province Social Development Minister Yubaraj Dulal and Internal Affairs and Law Minister Shalikram Jamkattel also reached the flood site and monitored the situation, according to Chief District Officer Umesh Kumar Dhakal.
Meanwhile, the flooded Bhotekoshi River has submerged the under-construction 102MW Mid-Bhotekoshi Hydropower Project site. According to project chief Sunil Kumar Lama, a secretary of the project and a Chinese technician have been missing in the flood that has also swept away the storeroom used to keep project equipment.
Bahrabise Mayor Nimfunjo Sherpa estimated the damage caused by the floods to the project to run into billions of rupees. The project’s dam has been damaged from the floods and landslide near the powerhouse.
“Preparations are being made to salvage the equipment buried by the landslide using a crane,” said Sherpa.
The swollen Bhotekoshi River has swept away the riverfront areas along the Araniko Highway at Jure, Sandhikhola, Jaletar and near the Area Police Office of Bahrabise.
The road between Khagdal and Jambu, as well as a few vehicles, have also been swept away by the raging river.
According to police, floods have swept away a concrete bridge of Khagdal and four vehicles — a truck, a bus, a tractor and a jeep. The floods have also triggered landslides and blocked the road, hampering rescue efforts. According to CDO Dhakal, a team of security personnel had headed to the flood site on foot in the morning.
Damage caused by floods and landslides to Araniko Highway has affected road connectivity to China. The road had become operational about a year ago. It was first damaged in a huge landslide, then the massive earthquake on 25 April 2015 rendered it non-operational.
