Rival faction threatens to expel Oli from Nepal Communist Party

Kathmandu, January 18

The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal today sought an explanation from KP Sharma Oli within the next three days for defying the constitution and party rules and statute.

NCP Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the party sought clarification from Oli on why he should not be expelled from the party for defying party discipline. Shrestha said the party would terminate Oli’s general membership if he failed to respond to its letter satisfactorily.

Standing Committee member Surendra Prasad Pandey, Mukunda Neupane, and NCP Office Secretary Shree Ram Dhakal went to the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar to hand over the letter.

According to Dhakal, the party has sought clarification from Oli for acting beyond the scope of the constitution by dissolving the House of Representatives and defying party rules, policies, and statue.

The Dahal-Nepal faction’s move comes after the Nepali Congress and Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, which have been asked by the faction to jointly launch protests against ‘unconstitutional and undemocratic’ dissolution of the House of Representatives’, asked the faction to clarify if Oli was still with the party or his faction was a separate party.

NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had recently told Dahal and Nepal that they could still mend their differences with Oli. The Dahal faction had removed the PM from the post of party co-chair and replaced him with Madhav Kumar Nepal. Oli, however, claims that his faction is the authentic NCP and the faction led by Dahal and Nepal has no power to take any action against him. The Election Commission has been looking into the matter and will decide which faction is the authentic NCP.
