KMC to enact disaster management act

Kathmandu, April 26

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is to form a committee headed by its mayor within a few days for implementing its ‘’disaster management act.’’

KMC’s fourth town assembly had passed the Disaster Management Act on April 7. An 11-member committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya in a few days, said KMC spokesman Ishwarman Dongol.

The committee will comprise KMC deputy mayor, chief administrative officer, coordinators of thematic committees, representative of the district administration office, chief or the representative of the federal security bodies based within the geographical area of the KMC and chief or representative of the State Police Office, as members.

Besides, the committee will also have chief of the metropolitan police, representative from the NGO Federation, one local representative of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, local representative of Nepal Red Cross Society, and one representative of the chamber of commerce and industry to be nominated by the KMC mayor.

The official assigned by KMC to look after disaster management will act as the member-secretary of this committee.

According to spokesman Dongol, KMC will also set up a separate fund for disaster management. The act is meant to minimise damage caused by natural and non-natural disasters, to protect and preserve cultural heritages and to carry out disaster management work in an effective and coordinated manner.

It also provides support for coordination in rescue work, relief distribution and other humanitarian assistance, as well as for mobilisation of security bodies, the fire brigade and other service providers.
