Youth leadership summit kicks off

Kathmandu, April 26

Global Youth Leadership Summit-2019 kicked off in Kathmandu today. More than 70 youths from 41 countries are participating in the summit.

The summit is being organised to maintain positive correlation among youths across the world and to work together to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking at the inauguration programme of the summit, former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal said involvement of youths in global issues would benefit the nation. He said, “It was very proud and positive thing to conduct discussion on global agenda under the leadership of Nepali youths.” He added youths’ participation in such agenda would set the country in the direction of development and prosperity.

Diwakar Aryal, president of Global Youth Parliament and the organiser of the summit, said the summit would hold discussion on such topics as climate change, sustainable development, youth entrepreneurship and tourism. “The summit also aims to promote Tourism Year 2020,” Aryal added.

Former finance minister Ram Sharan Mahat said economic and social changes were only possible under the leadership of youths and their participation. He added, “Hundreds of thousands of youths were forced to migrate abroad for work due to the failure of the government to provide employment opportunities in the country.” He added, “The government needed to focus on the employment policy and programmes to retain youths in the country.”

The summit will conclude tomorrow.
