DHANGADI: Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City has started providing self-defence training to girls and women in the area.

The sub-metropolis initiated the programme with the rise in rape and harassment cases in recent times. As many as 800 girls of wards 14, 18 and 19 were trained today.

According to Nripa Bahadur Wada, Mayor of the Sub-Metropolitan City, the programme was initiated to prevent cases of harassment and rape. He added that the training will help build self-confidence of the girls and applauded those who showed interest in being part of the programme.

“The training is very effective and is participated mostly by girls between the ages of 12 to 25,” says Prakash Chand, Chairman of National Gojuriyo Karate Association, Sudurpaschim. Chand added, some women over this age group have also attended the training session.

Murari Adhikari, Chair of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-18 said that the training would be organised for four days, adding that there has been good participation so far.

Last year, the sub-metropolis had partnered with Sudurpaschim Social Development Ministry and National Gojuriyo Karate Association to train as many as 2,400 girls.

“We are learning the techniques to protect ourselves,” says Priti Chaudhary, a local participating in the training programme. She added, “We are learning how to defend ourselves from people who might try to use force on us.”
