24hrs given to return extra fees

The government has decided to punish medical colleges that refuse to return the extra fees taken from students.

A meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs today decided to take stern action against medical colleges if they failed to return the money taken from students by November 26.

Earlier, on November 11, the government had given a 15-day ultimatum to medical colleges to return the extra fees taken from students. The deadline given by the government has already expired, but the colleges have yet to return the extra fees.

Minister of Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Attorney General Agni Kharel, Inspector General of Police Sarbendra Khanal and Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai were present at the meeting.

“The meeting has decided to take stern action against medical colleges. Directions have already been given to chief district officers and police across the country to punish medical colleges if they do not return the money within the given deadline,” said Kedar Nath Sharma, Spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs. “Students or their parents have to file an application. A fraud case will be filed against such medical colleges,” Sharma added.

At a meeting held today at the Ministry of Health and Population in the presence of Medical Education Commission representatives and medical college owners, medical college owners have agreed to return the extra money. “Medical college owners have said that they would come up with a modality for returning the extra fees in writing by tomorrow morning,” said Dr Shree Krishna Giri, vice-chair of Medical Education Commission.

Issuing a press release today, Dr Govinda KC, senior orthopaedic surgeon, demanded that medical colleges return extra fees taken from students. He has also demanded immediate arrest of medical college owners if they dilly-dally in returning the extra fees. His other demands include nationalisation of medical colleges at the earliest.

Medical students have been protesting against medical colleges for the last few days demanding refund of the exorbitant fees.

Students of Chitwan Medical College had ended their protest with the signing of an agreement with the college authorities on September 21 at Chitwan District Administration Office. The government had given a month’s ultimatum to return the extra fees later on September 23.

A meeting was held at Chitwan District Administration Office between college students and college administrators. The agreement stated that either the college would return the extra fees taken from students or adjust the fees by November 4.
